What are American high schools like? Well, I’m happy to tell you what I know.
When I started school here, it had already been a week since the school opened. At this school, freshmen usually go on a trip for about three days at the beginning of school. Unfortunately I missed that wonderful trip, which would have been the best time to get to know my classmates. I was really sad. I wished I’d known about it earlier.
Despite the disappointment, however, I gradually adapted to my new life and school. There is a space in the basement of the teaching building where students chat and meet each other. As we do not always have the same classrooms and classmates, the school wants us to get to know each other there. Students usually come to school early, sit in that space and have fun. Around the space, there are many lockers for students to leave their books in, so that students do not have to carry a heavy schoolbag everywhere.
It really surprises me that we have almost no textbooks. We only have textbooks for World History and Algebra 2 and they are big and heavy, like bricks. For other classes, we only need binders (活页夹) with paper in them. Without textbooks, students learn things freely and actively. For example, my humanities teacher just teaches us what is in her mind at the time. We never know what we will learn.
Another difference between American schools and Chinese schools is that American schools care about students’ morality (道德) more than their academic studies. For example, if you do not finish your homework, you will just be asked to do it later, but if you cheat or lie, you will get a warning or even be kicked out.
I think that most students here are good at schoolwork as well, but compared to Chinese students, they can make learning a more joyful experience. I think we should take the good points from our two different kinds of education to perfect our approach to studying.

Experts have confirmed youngsters who use Face book(美国一社交网站) do worse in exams.
For the study, the researchers quizzed 219 college students about their study habits and the time they spent on Face book. They found that 65 percent of Face book users used the net daily, often checking it several times to see if they had received new messages. The study said that 68 percent of students who used Face book didn’t perform as well as those who did not use the site.
Surfing on Face book can swallow up(耗尽) hours of study time. University student Daisy Jones, 21, said: \"I was in the library trying to write a 2,000-word essay when I noticed my Face book habit had gotten out of hand. I couldn’t resist going online. You do that, then someone’s photo catches your eyes. Before you know it, a couple of minutes have turned into a couple of hours and you haven’t written a thing.\"
While they focused on Face book, the findings are also thought to hold true for other social networking sites. A research by the National Literacy Trust recently showed that one in five youngsters aged seven to 15 never read books outside school because websites and blogs are becoming their reading matter of choice. Pupils ranked social networking sites, blogs, general websites and magazines above books in a survey of their reading habits. Research has also shown that youngsters are spending up to six hours a day in front of a screen.
However, students appeared to ignore the effect of going online on their study performance. The majority did not feel it had an impact on their work.
A spokesman for Face book said: \"There is also research that shows the benefits of services like Face book. It’s in the hands of students, with the help of their parents, to decide how they spend their time.\"

Advice for High School Students
As a person who is graduating from high school very soon,I have some suggestions for students in high school or students who are soon going to be high school students. 9 I am sure others can benefit from reading them and will not make similar mistakes like me.
10 Do not value first impressions highly. Don’t dismiss a person or an idea too early just because you immediately get a bad impression. You will miss many opportunities because of that. Although something seems bad at the first impression, it does not mean it is bad all the time. Try to give everything a fair chance.
Don’t try to please everybody. There is no way you can please everybody or get everybody to agree with you. 11 It is a huge waste of time.
Have respect for authority. No matter how much you may dislike them, just remember that teachers and parents care about you and they are only doing their jobs. 12 Don’t argue with them and just obey them.
Realise a high school is not the real world. The real world isn’t a closed environment. 13 What is rewarded in high school such as popularity and agreement is different from what is rewarded in the real world. If high school isn’t working out for you, you may find yourself better at handling the real world.
