How to Be More Inclusive at School
School should feel like a place where everyone is accepted and where everyone is safe. It is a place where children go to learn important skills which prepare them for the future. However, not all children feel accepted and safe at school. In fact, some children are made fun of for being different. When this happens, it is called bullying.
Bullying is a problem that occurs in most schools in some form, and one with which all children are familiar. No one should be bullied, but what can be done about it?
Parents, school staff, and other caring adults have a role to play in preventing bullying. However, there are things you can do as a student to help prevent bullying as well. If you wish to be proactive(积极主动的)in defeating bullying at your school, one of the most effective things you can do is stand up for those who are bullied. Let those who are bullied know that others are looking out for them and that bullying is unacceptable. Make an effort to recruit others to help you stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. You may also wish to start an anti-bullying club at school to gather students and work together to find ways to prevent bullying from happening. It is important to remember, however, that if you want to step in and stop bullying, you must do so safely. Sometimes, you may need the help of an adult to handle the situation. Talk to teachers or guidance counselors who can safely address the bullying. You may also wish to talk to your parents and ask them for advice. No student should be afraid of going to school. It is up to all of us to do our part to prevent bullying.
Saving the Wild Animals
There is an undeniable fact that many wild animals are facing the danger of extinction. According to a recent survey made by some experts, about 9 species disappear from our earth every year. It is obvious that the problem has become a serious one worth our concern.
When we explore this problem, some underlying factors emerge. In the very first place, the environment
that the wild animals are living in has been destroyed greatly. With the fast development of human society, the wild animals’ living areas have become narrower and narrower. Many of the wild animals now are confronted with food crisis. What’s more, people hunt animals for food and skin. A good case in point is that the Japanese have killed a lot of whales because they like to eat the meat. In addition, human beings are largely responsible for the pollution of natural environment.
In order to protect our resources of ecology, people should realize that the loss of any species is at least the loss of source of knowledge and source of natural beauty. Therefore, the following measures should be taken: pollution standards are made to keep down poisons; killing off certain rare species is prohibited; national parks should be set up as wildlife reserves. Only if we human beings take some drastic measures can wild animals be preserved.
How Sports Affect Our Lives
With the increase of people’s awareness of health, sports have become an inseparable(不可分割的) part of our lives. We do various kinds of sports in our spare time, such as jogging, playing football, basketball, tennis, and so on. Also we become fans of certain sports teams for their excellent performance, thanks to the TV live broadcasting. Children grow up with fantasies(幻想) of becoming the next Messi(梅西) or Yao Ming. Sports have influenced our lives in many ways.
Among the influences of sports on our lives, there are two benefits that attract our special attention. Firstly, doing sports regularly can strengthen our health and make us become fitter and fitter. Modern life is full of stress and modern people usually lack exercise. By doing sports we enjoy, we can get rid of the stress brought about by work, and exercise our muscles and improve our flexibility in moving. Regular and proper
exercise can greatly reduce the risk of getting diseases like obesity (肥胖), high blood pressure (高血压), etc.
Secondly, doing sports can also benefit us mentally. It can help us cultivate (培养) many good qualities such as perseverance (毅力), cooperation, hard work and confidence. When we successfully reach a goal which we have set together with our teammates, we will feel proud of ourselves and the friendship between each other will be tightened.
When we talk about the benefits brought by sports, we should also keep in mind some things we need to pay attention to. Warm up your body fully before you start doing sports; do not try sports that you are not ready for; avoid injuries when doing sports.
Sports can bring us a lot of benefits. They have affected our lives in many ways. We need to do sports regularly and properly to build a healthy body.
Volunteer — Why and How
It is said that many westerners voluntarily devote part of their lives to serving others. The average American spends 50 hours every year doing volunteer work. The number of people, who attach great significance to volunteering, is on the rise. Needless to say, the importance of volunteer work cannot be overestimated. However, why do people choose to be volunteers? I believe the reasons are as follows.
People help others, motivated by their altruism. As an old Chinese saying goes, “People are born virtuous.” It is natural that people empathize with others. Therefore, we mentor children, visit the sick and care for the elderly. People take the responsibility of helping others, motivated by their faith.
In this ever-changing world, peace is considered priceless. People deeply believe that everyone should take the responsibility to make the world a better place. That is our aspiration. That is our hope. Therefore, we choose to be volunteers.
What steps should we take in preparing for such a role? We need to consider how much free time we have
and what we are willing to sacrifice. Then, evaluate our skills and talents. The next step is to contact organizations which can help you find volunteer programs that are suitable for you. Finally, a genuine commitment to such a program is essential.
Compassion is desperately needed in our world today. So if you are ready to show your commitment to helping others, become a volunteer today!
How to Be a Polite House Guest When Visiting Someone’s Home
Proper manners and etiquette are important in order to make a good impression on others and feel good about oneself. However, there is no single set of manners all people can agree upon. Proper manners differ between people, cultures and communities. Sometimes, it can be difficult to know how to behave properly when visiting someone else’s home, especially if he or she comes from a background that differs from your own.
There are some general rules to abide by when visiting others, regardless of their background. One thing to remember is to arrive with a gift of some sort. After all, your hosts have gone out of their way to open their home to you. The least you can do is arrive with a gift to show your gratitude to them. Ask about house rules in order to avoid offending your hosts. Everyone has a different set of expectations from guests, so it’s best to ask your hosts about theirs so that you do not accidentally violate these expectations without knowing. Also make an effort to lend a hand where you can. If you notice your host slaving away at a large dinner, ask what you can do to help. You may also offer to set the table or clear it later. In addition, try your best to clean up after yourself, especially in common areas. Before you go, leave a parting gift to thank your hosts for their hospitality. Finally, upon arriving back home, make it a point to reach out once more and send your hosts a thank-you note to express your gratitude for being hosted. This will ensure that your hosts know that you are a courteous and appreciative guest.
On Eating Safely
We don’t have to worry about the shortage of food nowadays in our nation as the economy and technology have been more advanced than the past. However, we are faced with a more serious problem, which is food safety. Little wonder, given the recent headlines: melamine dumped in pet food and fed to millions of chickens and pigs; E. coli bacteria killing people who eat spinach; salmonella in peanut butter from Georgia, etc.
To protect ourselves from tainted food (问题食物), we need pay attention to the following two aspects. First, beware of the food you buy. While commercially prepared food is usually safe, accidents do occur. We have witnessed a string of incidents of food safety problems happening in China, ranging from the industrial dye of tofu to the notorious melamine-tainted milk powder. So serious are the accidents that some victims even lost their lives. Luckily, our government is very concerned about food safety. In recent years, it has passed laws and regulations on food safety and special offices are established to oversee the food safety problems.
Second, we should pay attention to the hygiene (卫生) in daily life to protect ourselves against all kinds of bacteria such as salmonella or E. coli. We should always wash our hands thoroughly after using the restroom and handling raw meat or poultry. Besides, we should avoid eating raw eggs or unwashed fruits and vegetables. In addition, avoid cross-contamination of food. For example, uncooked meat should be kept away from produce, cooked food and uncooked food.
In a word, only when food safety is no longer such a big concern can people enjoy their lives.
