We can see walls everywhere in the world. But the Great Wall of China is the biggest of all. The Chinese call it “the Ten-thousand-li Great Wall”. It is more than 6,000 kilometres. It is 4-5 metres wide. In most places, five horses or ten men can walk side by side.

When you visit the Great Wall, you can’t help wondering how the Chinese were able to build such a great wall thousands of years ago. Without any modern machines, it was really very difficult to build it. They had to do all the work by hand. It took millions of men hundreds of years to build it. The Great Wall has a history of over two thousands years. The king began to build the first parts of it around two thousand seven hundred years ago. Then Qin Shihuang had all the walls joined up. He thought that could keep the enemy out of the country.

Today the Great Wall has become a place of interest. Not only the Chinese people but also people from all over the world come to visit it.

Big Ben

In 1834, the clock tower in London was burned down. People Flanned to build a new clock which would be the biggest and best in the world. So the clock had to be big and keep very good time. The big clock was made in two years. Five more years later the tower was finished. Then people put the big clock in the tower, and made it ring out for the first time on July 11, 1859.

The Pyramids

Thousands of yours ago, the kings of Egypt built strong tombs for themselves. Over these tombs they built pyramids. They thought their bodies would be well kept in these until they could come back to life. They also hoped the world would look on the pyramids as monuments to them and would remember them for ever .

There are abound 80 pyramids in Egypt . But the Great Pyramid is the biggest of all. It is nearly 5,000 years old. It is about 137 meters high today, but it was once higher. It is made of 2,300,000 huge stones. Most of them are higher than a man and weigh about two and a half tones each. Some weigh as much as fifteen tones.. It took more than 100,000 men twenty years to build the Great Pyramid.

When you look at the pyramids, you can’t help wondering how the Egyptians were able to build them thousands of years ago. How did they cut, carry and lift such huge stones? Each stone fits so well, yet they didn’t have our modern machines! Scientists have studied the pyramids, but nobody can tell just how the Egyptians built them so long ago.

Inside the pyramids are the rooms for the bodies of the kings and queens. There are lots of wonderful treasures in the pyramids, too. Thieves have broken into some of the pyramids and taken away many of the treasures to foreign countries. They have even stolen the mummies. Today some of the mummies and treasures are on show in museums in different countries. When the kings had the pyramids built for them ,they perhaps never thought this would happen.

The Grand Canyon

Probably you have seen photographs of the Grand Canyon, the great valley in the desert country of Arizona. But you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty. The Grand Canyon is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.

The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years. Slowly, the river cut down through hard rock. At the same time, the land was rising. Today , the canyon is one and a half kilometers deep and 445 kilometers long. The oldest rocks at the bottom of the canyon are more than billion years old. The width varies from about 200 metres to 29 kilometers across. The rim or top of the canyon is about 2,300 metres above sea level on the South Rim ,and about 3000 metres on the other side, the North Rim. As a result, there are different kinds of plants and animals on opposite sides of the canyon. The South Rim is dry desert country. The North Rim has tall forests.

The canyon looks different at different times of day, and in different seasons and weather. At sunrise and sunset the red , gold ,brown, and orange colours of the rocks are especially clear and bright . In winter, the canyon is partly covered with snow .

The view from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the best. Most visitors come to the South Rim and stay in campgrounds or hotels. Every point along the canyon’s edge offers a different view.

The North Rim of the Canyon if quieter. It takes all day to drive there from the South Rim because there is only one bridge across the Colorado River. On the way , you go through Navado Indian lands, and a colourful pink desert called “The Painted Desert”.

You can walk down into the Grand Canyon ,or you can go down on the back of a mule. You can also take a boat trip down the Colorado River, and camp on the beaches at night But whether you see the Grand Canyon from the top or the bottom , it will be an experience that you will never forget. 1.
