A. To advertise the Jitterbug phone. B. To introduce how to enter the digital age. C.To describe the author’s personal experience.
D. To show users how to use the Global Positioning System. B
Well, I finally decided to enter the digital age. My kids have been annoying me; my book group made fun of me; and the last straw was when my car broke down, and I was stuck on the highway for an hour before someone stopped to help. But when I went to the cell phone store, I almost changed my mind. The phones are so small that I can’t see the numbers. They all have cameras, computers and a Global Positioning System that’s supposed to spot me from space. All I want to do is to be able to talk to my grandkids! And the rate plans(资费套餐)! They were complex, confusing, and expensive! I’d almost given up when a friend told me about her new Jitterbug phone. Sometimes I think the people who designed this phone and the rate plans had me in mind. The phone fits easily in my pocket, but when it opens it reaches from my mouth to my ear. The display is large, so I can actually see who is calling. With a push of a button I can control the volume(音量), and if I don’t know a number, I can simply push one for a friendly, helpful operator that will look it up and even dial for me. The Jitterbug also reduces background noise, making the sound loud and clear. There’s even a dial tone, so I know the phone is ready to use.
A hole at the bottom of a ship will allow water to flood into the hull(船体), causing it to sink. But believe it or not, most large ships sailing over the deep ocean waters actually have one or more good-sized holes at their bottom! These holes have been given a rather fanciful name—moon pool. A moon pool is basically an opening located at the floor or the hull of a sailing ship, which is used for gaining easier and safer access to the water below.
Above Sea Level
This is the first and most basic type of the moon pool. It is located within a sailing ship, inside a chamber(船舱) that is built above sea level. This chamber is constructed such that it is easily accessible via hallways and stairways, inside the sailing shup. This type usually requires ships to have a twin-hull design, and is most commonly found on oil drilling platforms.
At Sea Level
This type is found in ships with a single hull design. In these ships, the hull is well below sea level, which causes the water to rise up inside the opening of the moon pool, making it seem there is a swimming pool. To prevent the rising water from flooding the hull and sinking the ship, the sides of the moon pool are designed such that they rise up higher than water level in the pool, containing an overflow(溢流管). This type also has doors present inside the hull. The openings to the moon pool can be closed by shutting the doors.
Below Sea Level
This type of moon pool is present below sea level. The chamber housing the moon pool is made completely airtight(不透气的) with a two-door mechanism. The first door opens to the hull while the second one opens to the sea water. When a diver wants to enter the water, he will enter into the middle chamber through the first door, while the second one is kept locked.Once the dive is inside the chamber, the first door is locked. Then the second door is opened and the diver is able to enter the water. To get back in, he will need to get into the chamber through the second door while the first remains locked. Once he is inside the chamber, the second door is closed, and the water in the chamber is pumped out before the first door is opened.
In Submerged Habitats(水下居住舱)
This type is usually found in deep underwater habitats, which are made completely airtight and filled with air up to normal atmospheric pressure. The moon pool provides the only way to enter or exit from these habitats. The entry and exit mechanism is similar to the one used by the
below sea level type of moon pools.
59. A moon pool on an oil drilling platform______. A. has doors present inside the platform B. looks like a swimming pool in the platform C. is easy to access through hallways and stairways D. has higher sides than water level in the pool
60. Moon pools in ships with a single hull design are often built_______. A. above sea level B. at sea level habitats
61. What is the right procedure for getting back in the hull through the moon pool below sea level?
a. Open the first door. c. Close the second door. A. d, b, c, a
B. d, a, b, c
b. Pump the water put. d. Enter the secong door. C
Young American adults own smartphones at a higher rate than any other age group. Researchers from Duke University wanted to see if using the smartphone with a low-cost weight-loss App might help young adults in the US who are overweight.
If you’re rooting for smartphones to solve all our health problems, you’re not going to like what the researchers found. The smartphone App doesn’t help young adults lose any weight.
The study looked at 365 young adults aged 18 to 35. A third of the young adults used an Android App created for the study, which not only tracked their calories, weight and exercise but also offered interactive features like goal setting, games and social support. Another third of the young adults received six weekly personal coaching courses, followed by monthly phone follow-ups. Plus, this personal coaching group was also encouraged to track their weight, calories and exercise by smartphones. The last third of young adults were put into a control group and given three necessities on healthy eating and exercise — nothing else.
Researchers tracked the young adults’ progress after six months, one year and two years. The personal coaching group lost more weight than the other two groups at the six-month mark, but that lead(领先) disappeared at the one-and two-year follow-up. As for the group using the
C. a, b, d, c
D. d, c, b, a
C. below sea level D. in submerged
smartphone App, their average weight loss was never more than the other two groups.
Lead author Laura Svetkey says that she and her colleagues were both surprised and disappointed at the results. “Given the power of cell phone apps and the popularity of these health and fitness apps, we thought this might be good to provide an effective solution at a low cost,” says Svetkey.
But Svetkey says it’s difficult to get the same level of intensity(强度)in an App that you might get through personal coaching. Plus, she says, people tend to stop using weight-loss apps after a while.
There are good reasons to help young adults control their weight. Weight gain during the young adult years is associated with a variety of health problems later in life, including metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease.
Since I am a young American adult who uses a popular weight-loss App on my iPhone, I wonder if there is any real harm in using one of these apps, even if they aren’t proven effective in research studies. So I turn to Svetkey. She says, “These study results aren’t the reason to give up hope about the potential for weight-loss apps, but instead are the reason to strengthen research efforts. More work is needed to understand how to use the technology and show its strengths in a way that will lead people to change their eating and exercise behaviors.”
62. The underlined part “rooting for” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “_____”. A. supporting
B. disliking
C. quitting
D. doubting
63. From the passage we know that in the study _______. A. the group using the smartphone App lost the most weight B. participants in the control group failed to lose weight C. all participants surveyed gains weight two years later
D. the personal coaching group was more successful at the six-month mark . Which of the following does Laura Svetkey agree with?
A. Weight-loss apps in smartphones are an effective solution to over-weight people. B. Compared with weight-loss apps, personal coaching is more effective. C. Being overweight will cause serious diseases to people. D. People should have confidence in weight-loss apps all the time. 65. From the last paragraph, we can infer that ______.
A. people are advised to give up using weight-loss apps B. people should eat less and exercise more
C. there is a long way to go to help people lose weight with technology D. the more advanced technology is, the more benefits people will get
D
If you have something to say about someone, say it today! It may make a world of difference. Last week at the Night of Hope in downtown Los Angeles, Victoria Osteen, one of my best friends, shared a story about a very special birthday present from a dear friend. It wasn’t expensive jewelry or a designer handbag. It was an attractive box. And though it was lovely, the box wasn’t the real gift.
When the friend presented it to Victoria, he said some wonderful things about the birthday girl. Then, he acted as if he were putting those compliments into the box and began passing it around to everyone else at the table. One by one, Victoria’s family and friends also said loving things about her, and one by one they “places” their kind words into the birthday box. Victoria shared how much that night had meant to her, and that day she put that beautiful box in a striking place in her bedroom as a reminder of the sweet words that were put in the box and in her heart.
I related this story because I also have what I call “an encouragement drawer”. As a writer, I hope to sell articles and present my picture books to the right editor, but I sometimes get rejection letters from editors and publishers. Thankfully there have been acceptance letters, contracts and awards along the way, too. But do you know what means even more? The thank-you cards and sweet notes that I’ve received from other writers I’ve met at the many writers’ conferences made me serve as a lecturer.
I remember looking forward to one particular conference more than 15 years age. I knew the cost of attending it really wasn’t in our budget, but I also knew that if I asked my husband to give me the conference ticket as my birthday present, he would. And that’s exactly what he did. We were living in Texas, and the writers’ conference was several thousand miles away. I had researched the editors who were going to appear there and the works to be offered, and I was sure the conference would be life-changing for me.
It was just not in the way I’d expected.
During the very first day of the “Writing for Children” conference, I sat in the front row. I
was so excited that I hardly slept the night before. I couldn’t wait to learn from a fruitful children’s book writer. She greeted us with “Well, I wish I had better news. The children’s market is almost impossible to break into right now. I mean, I am well-published in it but I’m having a tough time making a sale.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! Some people got up and left. I stayed until the end, hoping her mood would improve and offer some words of wisdom. But neither happened. I walked back to my house that afternoon defeated, discouraged and downright mad. Later that night, I said to myself, “I should encourage others to write for children.” That’s why when I received emails, thank-you notes and cards saying “Thank you for helping me see that I can really make it a freelancer(自由作家),” “Thank you for encouraging me to write that devotional proposal---I got a contract”, or “Thank you for being so excited about my manuscript(手稿) about children. I was about to give up before meeting with you”, I would put them in my “encouragement drawer”.
And, on those days when I received three rejection letters or a bad review of a recent book, I would walk into my office, open one of those encouragement drawers and read a few cards. Like Victoria, I immediately felt uplifted after spending a few moments reading the nice things that people had written to me.
Maybe you don’t have a birthday box filled with wonderful compliments or an encouragement drawer filled with thank-you cards and notes, but you can spend some time on the good things and write a few thank- you notes of your own.
66. What does the underlined word “compliments” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. complains B. greetings C. gifts 67. What is it that gave the author great encouragement? A. A good review about her recent book. B. Acceptance letters from some editors.. C. Contracts and awards from some publisher. D. Thank-you notes and cards from other writers.
68. Which of the following is NOT true about the author’s experience at the “Writing for Children”
conference?
D ideas
A. She was too excited to sleep well the night before. B. The conference was somewhat life-changing for the author. C. The fruitful children’s book writer’ s words were full of wisdom. D. The conference didn’t live up to her expectations. 69. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To look back on her career as a writer of children’s books. B. To inspire people to fill up others’ “encouragement drawer”. C. To show off her pride in encouraging other writers.
D. To describe a particular writers’ conference she once attended. 70. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. A box of encouragement B. A story about birthday presents
C. The importance of writers’ conferences. D. The relationship between readers and writers

第六部分 任务型阅读(10分, 每空填一词)
Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent(程度) do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?
In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people traditionally prioritize(优先考虑) caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.
Modern people act selfishly to survive the fierce competition of life. They say that it is a jungle and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues’ benefits. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.
In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were condemned(责难) then. But we cannot ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with people in the modern society.
Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either.
Some people take great pleasure helping and giving much to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial(互利的) relationship.
In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centred than those in the past due to heavy outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and to build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.

书面表达:
Nowadays more and more senior school students are getting stressed in their studies.
In order to find out effective ways to release the stress, a survey was made last week in five
senor schools. Altogether 500 students were interviewed, and the results are as follows: About thirty-five percent of the students let out their stress by doing sports. They play football, for instance. Meanwhile, another forty—five percent of them release their stress by listening to different kinds of music. In addition, the rest twenty percent of them usually get help from the school psychological consulting office.
When I’m stressed, I usually do lots of physical exercise such as walking around our school
playground quickly for about one hour to get myself tired at night. I find it useful for me because I’ll have a good sleep then. In this way, I’ll feel relaxed and forget all about my worries.

W: Where have you seen them, in magazines? M: No, on the Internet, but sometimes on TV programs. (Text 5)
W: Jack, what stars do you like, singing stars or sports stars?
M: I like the football star David Villa Sanchez. Can you tell me who you like? W: I like Charlize Theron!
M: So you have seen many of her movies, right? (Text 6)
W: Hi. My name’s Jenny. Nice to meet you. M: Nice to meet you, too. My name is Francisco. W: What?
M: Francisco, but all my friends and family back in Peru call me Pancho. W: Okay, Pancho. So, tell me about your family? M: Well, I have three brothers and two sisters.
W: Wow. That is a big family. So are you the oldest, Pancho? M: No, I’m the second oldest in my family. W: So, what do your parents do?
M: My father is a taxi driver in Lima, Peru. He works hard to support the family. W: How about your mother?
M: She is running a small family store. W: What kind of store?
M: We mainly sell food, like bread, eggs, and cookies, things that people buy every day.
(Text 7)
W: Dad, can you lend Jenny and me some money? M: For what?
W: We want to get tickets for a rock concert. We’ll pay you back out of our babysitting money. M: How much are these tickets? W: Eighteen dollars each.
M: Eighteen dollars? That’s a lot of money.
W: That’s not very much for this band, Dad. At the concert there will be two world-famous singers who will sing some popular songs. So the tickets are not expensive. M: When will you need the money?
W: Bob is going to the town tomorrow to get the tickets. M: All right. Here’s the money.
W: Thanks a lot, Dad. I will call Bob right now. (Text 8) M: Miss Rose? W: Yes, sir?
M: Did you speak to Mr. Gerald?
W: Yes, I did. I asked him to call later. He said he would call again in about an hour. M: That’s fine. By the way, has Charlie copied my report yet? I need it this afternoon. W: Not yet, sir. I’ve told him to finish it by 10 this morning. There ought to be no problem. M: Thanks. How are things with you, Rose? I hear you are looking for a new job. How are the job interviews going?
W: Sorry, Mr. Black. I just want to see if I am able to do other jobs. Anyhow, five years is a long time to work in a company.
M: I understand. Pity you want to leave. We’ve been good friends for all these years. Good luck with your job-hunting. W: Thank you, Mr. Black. (Text 9)
M: Hi, miss, I am Officer Belford. You reported a break-in just now? W: Yes, I did, ten minutes ago.
M: I’ll need a little more information about it. What time did it happen?
W: It must have been sometime between 12 and 1:30 because I was at home until almost 12 and I just got back at 1:30. M: What did they get?
W: Well, some jewelry and the television are missing.
M: OK. Good, you’re making a list. By the way, did you have your belongings marked? W: My husband cut his name on the TV. M: By the way, where is your husband?
W: He’s on a trip to Canada with my son. And I haven’t told him about the robbery. M: I see. Where did you put your jewelry?
W: I put it in the refrigerator. But all my good jewelry is in the safe box in the bank. M: OK. I’ll be in touch with you as soon as we have found any information. (Text 10)
The workers at the wild animal center receive baby animals, including birds and rabbits. This is the busiest time when the workers care for and raise all the little ones before sending them back into the wild.
There are many reasons for these little animals’ coming to the center. First of all, street cats or dogs catch, injure or take little birds away from their nests. Sometimes people catch baby animals and keep them at home, giving them food that they are not used to. It makes them sick. Most people don’t realize that it’s against the law to get live animals out of their nests.
As for birds, people often find them on the ground in their yards, thinking they have no other choice but to leave them on the ground to die. This is because many people wrongly believe that once a bird is touched by a person, its mother will not take it back. But that’s not true.
If a little bird falls out of the nest, you should check whether it is injured. If not, you should put the bird back in the nest. If the bird is injured, call your local wildlife center quickly.
