Thomas Hardy was an English novelist and poet.He was born
on 2 June.1840 in the east of Dorchester in Dorset in England. His father worked as a builder.Hardy received his initial schooling from his mother at home until the age of eight when he went to school for the first time.In l862 he moved to London to study architecture at King’s College,London. He did well in studies and was given prizes from the Royal Institute of British Architects, but he had developed a strong desire for writing by then and decided to take it as a lifetime job.
Thomas Hardy met his wife Emma Lavinia in Cornwell in l870 while still working as an architect. They finally married in l874.Though the marriage
later became partly unhappy for unknown reasons, her death in l912 came as a shocking and painful experience to him.
Hardy as a writer is mainly known for his novels. His first novel,The Poor Man and the Lady, was written in l867 and was destroyed when a number of publishing houses refused to publish it.Later,he anonymously(匿名地)published two novels Desperate Remedies and Under the Greenwood Tree in l871 and l872.His first success as a writer came in l873,with the publication of his first important book A Pair of Blue Eyes, which was mainly about the happy days spent with his wife Emma after they got married.Another great success was his novel Far from the Madding Crowd. The novel was first published in l874 and brought him greater success. He next wrote The Return of the Native, published in l878.Hardy moved with his wife to Max Gate,in a house designed by him where he wrote The Mayor of Caster bridge, published in l886 followed by The Woodlanders(1887). Scientists have confirmed that the majority of overweight people who try to lose weight either by cutting calories or exercising will return to their former size.Fewer than 10 percent of the l2 million British people who go on a diet each year succeed in losing significant amounts of weight and most of those who do put it all back on again within a year. The study of 25,000 people provides further evidence of the popularity of‘yo-yo dieting’where slimmers get into a cycle of losing weight and regaining it.The scientists, from the Medical Research Council’s National Survey of Health and Development, have concluded it is better to avoid getting fat in the first place. They followed 5,362 men and women from their birth in l946 and 20,000 from birth in l958,measuring their weight and blood pressure and assessing their lifestyles. The researchers found both groups began gaining weight in the 1980s and have steadily increased in size ever since.
Dr Rebecca Hardy, the council’s programme leader on body size,said:“0nce people become, overweight, they continue extremely upwards. They hardly ever go back down.A(印刷不清两个单词) weight but very few get back to normal。The best policy is to prevent people becoming overweight. For men weight goes up steadily through life。For women it starts slowly and accelerates in the mid-thirties.”
But the study's findings do not mean dieting is pointless,as eating less and taking more exercise can increase fitness and lower blood pressure. In 2009,a quarter of adults and l4 percent of children were obese(过度肥胖的),according to the Department of Health’s latest Health Survey for England.Although previous research has shown one in four Britons is trying to lose weight at any one time,it has been predicted that 60 percent of us will be obese by 2050,leading to even more cases of diabetes(糖尿病),heart disease and cancer.Experts said we are programmed to put on weight rather than lose it.Dieting can make this tendency worse as decreasing calorie intake causes the body to go into starvation mode and reduce the amount of energy it naturally expends, making it even harder to lose weight.Commenting on the study,Professor Nick Finer from London Hospital, said:“It is unlikely that man would have progressed with mechanisms to fight against obesity which has only become a problem in the last 30~40 years. For most of human history, storing fat would have been an advantage.”
54.According to Dr Rebecca Hardy, which of the following is TRUE?
A.It is easier for men to lose weight than women.
B.Once people lose weight, they never put on weight again. C.Never to become fat is the best way of keeping a good shape. D.The fact that fat people keep their weight upwards is unusual. 55.The author says “the study’s findings do not mean dieting is pointless” because .
A.the study lacks believable facts
B.obese people are confident in losing weight C.dieting can really make a few people lose weight
D.dieting and sports help to keep people free from some diseases 56.From the last paragraph,we can learn that .
A.decreasing calorie intake makes it even harder to lose weight B.the idea that people lose weight with mechanisms is practical C.being overweight is a lasting problem through the human history D.by 2050 more and more people will have got unfit because of losing weight 57.Which of the following can serve as the best title of the passage? A.Which is better:cutting calories or exercisin97 B.Fat people can’t really keep the weight off C.A new study on people’s health D.How to go on a healthy diet C
Writers who are responsible but inexperienced often write with a great deal of self-conscious effort.Worrying constantly. they inch ahead word by word. When they have finally reached the end of the piece, they breathe a sigh of relief. They have done their best.[来源:Z*xx*k.Com]
Before they start to write, experienced writers generally think very hard about their audience and their purpose. They devote time to setting out the structure of the piece and perhaps to focusing a bit on their first few sentences. But once having solved these problems, these writers do not fastidiously(挑剔地)choose their words like Cherries from a
tree.Rather, they let them fall upon the page as if their orders were previously arranged.
Most writers want and need the situation of shaking the tree and letting the fruit fall as it will.If we free our inner voice,it speaks to us rapidly and clearly.By recording the words we hear,we quickly give form and substance to our thoughts.Half-formed ideas drifting through a writer’s mind are,of course, nearly impossible to evaluate or revise. And frequently they are lost before we even have the opportunity to try.But an idea that has been made clear and visible can be clarified and perfected at will. And writers must revise. The more knowledgeable and particular the writer, the more complex or sensitive the purpose, the more time the revision may take, and the better the result is likely to be. Your first reaction to your first draft can provide some insights, but it will only carry you a short distance. To strengthen your phrasing and sentence structure, you again need to know precisely what you are trying to do and how you are going to do it.As with word choice, revising word order with confidence requires some real knowledge of specific rules and techniques.Although this knowledge influences even your first drafts, you appreciate it the most when you revise. It helps you to spot weaknesses immediately and to know exactly what remedies(补救措施)to apply. 58.All of the following are characteristics of responsible but inexperienced writers EXCEPT .
A.inching ahead word by word B.being purposeful C.self-consciousness D.worrying constantly
59.The example of“cherries from a tree” is used to describe . A.the words a writer chooses to fill in his works
B.the difficulty of selecting the best word among many words C.the beautiful language a writer can produce
D.the way in which words fall into a writers’works naturally
60.Which of the following statements may the author agree with? A.The writers’inner voice usually speaks to them in an unclear way. B.Most writers get inspirations easily under fruit trees. C.Half-formed ideas in a writer’s mind can hardly be revised. D.The more knowledgeable the writer, the less time the revision. 61.What does the author mainly tell us in the last paragraph? A.First draft is always the perfect one.
B.Writers must work on basic skills like word choice and revising word order.
C.A writer is knowledgeable and his knowledge affects his works. D.Even if your writing skills have been fully displayed in your first draft, you still need revision. D
In l966,Allen and Beatrice Gardner, two professors at the University of Nevada in Reno, had a bright idea. They were interested in the evolution of language and the language abilities of great apes(巨猿).Previous attempts to teach chimpanzees(黑猩猩)to talk had ended in failure and the matter was considered by most people to be closed. But the Gardners realised that speech and language are not the same thing. Many deaf people, for example, are unable to speak but are perfectly able to communicate by gestures that have all the features of spoken language. The Gardners suspected that previous experiments had failed because chimpanzees are physically unable to speak.
They therefore decided to try teaching a chimpanzee to sign in the way that deaf people do. And their chosen subject,a female chimpanzee named Washoe after the county in which the university is,proved a skillful pupil.Though there is still debate about whether what Washoe learned was really equal to human language, there is no doubt that she learned a lot of words. All of this, however, raises a second question. If Washoe can learn a complex vocabulary of gestures from people,do they have such vocabularies naturally? To examine that possibility,Amy Pollick and Frans de Waal of Emory University have looked at gestures and expressions in chimpanzees.
Signalling by facial and oral expressions is common among primates(灵长类动物).Signalling by gesture is limited to the great apes. The researchers supposed that the meaning of expressions has been fixed by evolution while the meaning of gestures is learnt. If that were
true'particuiar sorts of facial and oral expressions would occur only in particular circumstances, and this would be the same across groups and even species. The same gestures,on the contrary, would be used in different circumstances.
The researchers found exactly what they expected.Expressions a[most always occurred in the same circumstances in different groups and different species.Gestures seemed to have completely different
meanings. Moreover, even within a single group, the meaning of a gesture could vary with circumstance.
It is also worth remembering that gesture is still an essential part of human language, even for those with normal hearing. The old joke that the way to make an Italian speechless is to tie his hands together has much truth in it.Evolution does not come up with comedies structures in a single leap. They are built up step by step. This study suggests that the step of speech may have been built on mental features that were acquired millions of years ago when the ancestors of apes and men began to wave meaningfully at each other.
62.We can learn from the first paragraph that . A.chimpanzees have no sense of language at all B.chimpanzees can use gestures like ordinary people
C.the Gardners found a new idea to develop the chimpanzee experiment D.previous experiments failed because they didn’t have clever chimpanzees
63.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A.Washoe failed to learn many words.
B.The Washoe experiment has resulted in further research. C.The vocabulary Washoe learnt is not similar to human language. D.The Gardners found that Washoe naturally knew how to use gestures.
.According to the author, gestures are different from facial and oral expressions in that .
A.the meanings of facial and oral expressions can vary with different circumstances
B.particular gestures Occur only in particular circumstances[来源:Z*xx*k.Com]
C.facial and oral expressions are not born but learnt D.gestures are limited to a certain type of species
65.What does the research carried out by Amy Pollick and Frans de Waal probably indicate?
A.Human speech may develop from signs and gestures. B.The apes are the closest species to human beings. C.Normal people do not really need the help of gestures. D.The great apes naturally have the ability to use gestures. (暂时缺少第9页)
