The temperature of deposition of an electricallynon-conducting solid from a gas is measured by passing a stream of the gas over thesurface of an electric conductor forming part of a periodically operated switch,progressively reducing the temperature of the conductor, and recording the surfacetemperature when the deposition of the non-conducting solid precludes closure of theswitch. As shown, for recording the \" ice-point\" of a gas, a continuously driven cam 6permits a platinum wire contact 1, carried by a spring biased bell crank 3, to contactperiodically the top face 9 of a copper rod 10, the gas being fed to and from the face 9by an inlet duct 24 and outlet 25. The bottom of the copper rod dips in a refrigerant, e.g.,liquid oxygen or nitrogen, and an electric heater 20 is provided around the top end of therod to remove the deposit therefrom after each measurement, so that a series ofmeasurements may be made automatically. The temperature of the rod face 9 ismeasured by a thermo-couple 19 connected in the circuit of a known chopper bar typerecorder. A brass insert 21' in the rod acts as a thermal resistance and renders the rate of
cooling independent of the depth of immersion of the lower copper portion 22 of therod. Contacts 15, 16 are closed by a further bellcrank and the cam 6 after the switch 9, 10makes and opened before the switch 9, 10 opens. Control circuit, Fig. 2. Normally, i.e.,when there is no deposit on the face 9 of the rod 10, a six bank four position uniselectorC1-C6 is in position 1, where each closure of the switch 1, 9 operates a relay MMCR toopen contacts S4 so that the closure of contacts 15, 16 has no effect. When the icedeposited prevents closure of the switch 1, 9, the subsequent closure of contacts 15, 16energizes a relay R2, w.hich in turn energizes stepping magnet R3 to advance theuniselector to position 2. Over banks C2, C6 the chopper bar motor CBM and heater 20respectively, are now switched on. After the temperature has been recorded, the releaseof the chopper bar closes a switch S5 which causes stepping of the uniselector to position3. The heater 20 remains on until the ice has been evaporated from the face 9.Subsequently, a switch S6, actuated by the pointer of the temperature recordinginstrument at a predetermined temperature, closes, and through an amplifier A closes aswitch S1 over which the stepping magnet R3 is energized to step the uniselector toposition 4, when it is immediately stepped again to normal (position 1) ready for the nextrecording to be made.
