The novel “Wuthering Heights” is written by Emily Bronte, which is regarded as the most intriguing novel by the later generation. For my part, after reading the novel, the love between Heathcliff and Catherine gives me a deep impression. This kind of love is so crazy and horrible.
The main character Heathcliff is an orphan who is brought to Wuthering Heights from the street of Liverpool by Mr. Earnshaw and treated as his own children Catherine and Hindley. Heathcliff and Catherine gradually fall in love with each other. Unfortunately, Heathcliff is forced to become a servant by Hindley after Earnshaw’s death. Before long, Catherine marries Edgar Linton for some reasons. Heathcliff is so sad that he leaves Wuthering Heights. Three years later, he makes a fortune and comes back. He begins his revenge:he degenerates Hindley into a sharper and Hareton who is Hindley’s son is forced to be Heathcliff’s servant. With the death of Hindley,Heathcliff becomes the real owner of Wuthering Heights. Meanshile, he induces Linton’s sister to marry him and to deliver a baby called little Linton. On the other hand, before Cathrine is dead she gives birth to a girl named Cathy. When she is a little beautiful girl she meets Heathcliff. This is the beginning of her misfortune. She is compelled to be little Linton’s wife. However, little Linton dies soon. Gradually Cathy and Hareton fall in love. In the meanwhile, Heathcliff is haunted by the memory of Catherine day and night so that he is seriously ill. When he finds the relationship between Cathy and Hareton, he is so resented that he wants to kill them. In the end, however, he is moved by Cathy’s eyes that are similar to Catherine’s. Several weeks later, Heathcliff dies of melancholy and psychological order.
I am so shocked by his twisted love. To some degree, it is his love that ruins Catheline, Edgar and himself. Heathcilff has worked all his life to destroy those two families-the Earnshaws and the Lintons. However, what does he get finally? Just nothing but numorous hatred and endless regret. Most people are happy to see Heathcliff’s death, while I am greatly sad. I’m so sympathy with Heathcliff. During his childhood, he is treated so unfairly just because of his poor family background-he is looked down by Hindley and cannot marry his beloved Catherine. I am always holding the view that it is not his fault to have his revenge partly. If Hindley treated Heathcliff as a friend not a servant, he would not become a bad and crazy person. What’s more, he does so many crazy things just because he loves Catheline so much so that he can’t take control of his behaviors and feelings. Jealousy, hatred and agony swell in his heart, and he can't help starting his revenge. Even though he gets the money and land of the Earnshaws and the Lintons, it is at the cost of losing Catheline forever. I don't know whether Catherine is in love with him, I just can assure that Heathcliff regards Catheline as his whole world. His world collapses while
he knows the death of Catherine. In fact, he is so lonely and desperate, having no friends, no relatives and no love.
“Love” is a main theme of this novel. I learn from that the end of love is not always happy and nice. Sometimes it may be full of miseries and misfortunes. In my opinion, the main reason that separates Catherine and Heathcliff is due to themselves. These characters in the novel reflect individuals in the real world. They are not perfect: they are arrogant and selfish. They not only can’t arrange their fate but also are troubled in their emotional entanglement. All of these limits lead to their tragedy.
I’m in deep thought that what kind of person Heathcliff is. Finally, I draw a conclusion that maybe he is not a good person but he is a real person. I appreciate him since he never hides his true feelings: his affections to Catheline, his despise to Edgar and his hatred to Hindley. Maybe this end is the most perfect result forever. Anyway, when I finish this novel, he is remembered by me deeply. I think he will be in my mind for long!
