14、For too many people, the harm begins early in life. Four out of ten babies born in the United States do not form a strong relationship with either parent, and they will pay for that in the rest of their lives.

New research from Princeton University confirms what other researchers have already found: the number of babies who are lack of the close relationship is rather big, which prevents them having a fair chance of having a successful life. That finding is supported by many other research projects, including a study from the University of Rochester showing that nearly one third of US parents don’t know what to expect from their newborns, or how to help them grow and learn and get along with others. Babies, as others have pointed out, don’t come with an owner’s guide book.

The basic problem, according to the Princeton’s study, is that 40 per cent of babies in the US live in fear or distrust of their parents, and that will turn into aggressiveness (侵犯), defiance (违抗) and hyperactivity (多动) as they grow into adults.

Of that number, 25 per cent don’t have a close relationship with their parents because the parents don’t satisfy their needs. And 15 per cent find their parents are so troubling that they will avoid them whenever possible.

That will not necessarily result in a lifetime of violence, but it will make living a successful life much more difficult. “They can overcome(克服) it,” sociologist Sophie Moullin of Princeton, the leader of that study, said in a telephone interview. “It’s not a make-or-break situation, but they might find it harder to control their behaviour.”

Moullin, along with his teammates from Columbia University and the University of Bristol in England, studied more than 100 research projects, to reach their conclusions.

Many reasons lead to the problem, including poverty(贫穷), ignorance(无知), and stress among parents who are so busy with their own problems that a new child is sometimes more than they can deal with. Yet strong relationships, the researchers say, are amazingly simple to achieve.

Sixty years ago, human beings first reached the top of Mount Qomolangma, known as Mount Everest in the West. But the increase in climbers is turning the world’s highest mountain into the “world’s highest junkyard(垃圾场)”.

Every year, more than 700 climbers spend nearly two months on Mount Qomolangma. They have left human waste and all kinds of rubbish, including oxygen bottles, broken tents, and plastic bags, according to Ang Tshering Sherpa, chief of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.

“The waste has become a health danger to people in the area since they depend on water from rivers fed by the melting glaciers(融化的冰川),” Sherpa said.

More and more people have realized the danger that Mount Qomolangma is facing and they are now taking active actions. To deal with the problem, Nepal has supported a special team of explorers and volunteers to clean the mountain

since 2008. So far they have brought down 15,000kg of rubbish. Nepal also started to ask each climber to bring down 8 kg of rubbish in 2014.

On the Chinese side of the mountain, Tibet() will collect a cleaning fee of $100-200 (620-1240 yuan) per climber starting from this year. A program named “Mount Qomolangma Action at the Third Pole of the Earth” also started in 2004 to clear up the mountain.

Hopefully, human beings will finally solve the problem, just as they found the way up the mountain successfully. 1.Which of the following was not used to call the world’s highest mountain long ago? A.Mount Everest. B.Mount Qomolangma. C.The Third Pole of the Earth. D.The world’s highest junkyard.

18、 As an English person, I can speak three languages — English, German and French, so do you think the British people are very good language learners? The fact is that they aren’t.

Some statistics (数据) from the survey done by the European Commission (欧盟委员会) showed that 62% of the British people only speak English. 38% speak at least one foreign language and 18% speak two or more. Compared with the British people, 56% of the people in other European countries speak at least one foreign language and 28% speak two or more. From this you can see that the British people are famous for not speaking foreign languages and that they are not good language learners in Europe.

And the survey also showed that English is the most widely-spoken foreign language. Many European people can have a conversation in English. That’s why many people don’t think it is necessary to learn a foreign language.

In Britain, students aren’t required to learn a foreign language. That means learning a foreign language is only a choice at school. In British schools it’s common for children to start learning a foreign language at 11 and many of them give it up at 14. So why don’t students continue learning foreign languages at school? Because they think it’s more difficult to get good marks in languages than in other subjects such as science or history.

To solve this situation, the British government is looking for different ways to improve language learning at school. One way is to start learning it at a much younger age. Another one is to give school children more choices. 1.What can we learn from the first two paragraphs? A.The people in England are good at learning languages. B.Most of British people only speak English.

C.British people are known for speaking foreign languages. D.Most of British people want to learn more than one language.

2.How many ways will the British government use to improve language learning? A.One.

B.Two.

C.Three.

D.Four.

3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.People in other European countries speak English as much as British people. B.One British student can’t give up learning a foreign language until 14.

C.Students in Britain prefer to learn science or history rather than learn a foreign language. D.It’s unusual for British students not to learn a foreign language. 4.What does the passage mainly want to tell us? A.Young English learners. C.Speaking English. Ⅴ.书面表达 19、书面表达

I learn from your letter that you want to know something about the Chinese traditional festival---the Dragon Boat Festival. I ‘m happy to share what I know about it with you.

The festival has a history of more than 2000 years. It falls on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese lunar calendar. On that day, people watch exciting dragon-boat races and make delicious zongzi, a kind of special food with sticky rice, meat, etc, wrapped in bamboo leaves. These two are both done in memory of Quyuan, a great poet in history.

In a word, we all love the festival because it’s a good reminder to look back on

history and a wonderful time to get together with family. I hope that you can come to celebrate it with us in the near future.
